Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of study which focuses on the development of specified products using living systems or organisms. The recent developments made in the field of biotechnology help our society in developing better health care products and vaccines. Apart from using this technology in the health care sector, it also helps in generating fuel which is less harmful for our environment. In this book, constant effort has been made to make the understanding of the difficult concepts of biotechnology as easy and informative as possible, for the readers. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike and contribute to the growth of the discipline. Biotechnology's core principles revolve around manipulating biological systems for practical applications. Key aspects include genetic engineering, which involves altering an organism's genetic material, and bioprocess engineering, which focuses on maintaining sterile environments for large-scale production of biotechnological products. These principles are applied across diverse fields like medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. Biotechnology is a fast developing technology as well as a science that has already made an impact to different aspects of day-to-day human life such as Public Health, Pharmaceuticals, Food and Agriculture, Bioenergetics and Information technology. It is very clear that biotechnology will be a key technology for the 21st century or the science of future. Biotechnology is currently being used in many areas including agriculture, bioremediation, food processing and energy production. DNA fingerprinting is becoming a common practice in forensics. Production of insulin and other medicines is accomplished through cloning of vectors that now carry the chosen gene. Immunoassays are used not only in medicine for drug level and pregnancy testing, but also by farmers to aid in detection of unsafe levels of pesticides, herbicides and toxins on crops and in animal products. These assays also provide rapid field tests for industrial chemicals in ground water, sediment and soil. In agriculture, genetic engineering is being used to produce plants that are resistant to insects, weeds and plant diseases. Biotechnology deals with techniques of using live organisms or enzymes from organisms to produce products and processes useful to humans. In this sense, making curd, bread or wine, which are all microbe-mediated processes, could also be thought as a form of biotechnology. However, it is used in a restricted sense today, to refer to such of those processes which use genetically modified organisms to achieve the same on a larger scale.
Professor Marian Petre, Bachelor in Science and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, graduated Faculty of Biology at Bucharest University. He worked as microbiologist at National Institute of R& D in Floriculture, as research assistant and, then as principal investigator at R & D Institute for Vegetables and Fruits Processing (1984-1994), Research Centre for Ecological Technologies (1994-1998), National Institute of R & D in Biological Sciences (1998-2000). Since 2000, he became lecturer at the Ecological University of Bucharest (2000-2004) and from 2004 to 2007 he worked as senior researcher at National Institute for R & D in Horticultural Biotechnology Stefanesti-Arges. Since 2007, he is teaching as professor of biotechnology for environmental protection, microbiology and bioremediation at the University of Pitesti, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Natural Sciences. So far, he wrote and published over 140 papers, 50 of them being published in international journals and proceeding volumes all over the world. He wrote 10 books 2 book chapters.
