Usability affects many cybersecurity domains presented throughout this book. Like other cybersecurity issues, human-computer interaction and usable security also rely on empirical experimentation. Good work in these areas also requires an understanding of how humans work. Despite its widespread applicability, usability evaluation is often overlooked and undervalued. In "A Roadmap for Cybersecurity Research" published by DHS in 2009, usable security is identified as one of 11 hard problems in infosec research. This report, and others like it, point out that security and usability have historically been at odds. This situation comes in part from implementation choices that make security choices unintuitive and confusing. Security adds complexity to a system and interferes with the user's primary goals, so it is an area where collaboration between the cybersecurity community and the usability research community is required. The science of usability as applied to security is an unmet goal. The intersection of Cyberworld Security (cybersecurity) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a critical, evolving field focused on bridging the gap between user-friendly interfaces and robust protection against cyber threats. As reliance on online services grows, security problems often arise from poor interaction between humans and systems, making the design of secure, intuitive interfaces essential for preventing vulnerabilities. Computer users are exposed to technology mainly through user interfaces. Most users' perceptions are based on their experience with these interfaces. HCI (human computer interaction) is concerned with these interfaces and how they can be improved. Considerable research has been conducted and major advances have been made in the area of HCI. Information security is becoming increasingly important and more complex as business is conducted electronically. However, state-of-the-art security-related product development has ignored general aspects of HCI. The objective of this book is to promote and enable security awareness of end-users in their interaction with computer systems. It thus aims to consolidate and integrate the two fields of information security and HCI. Cybersecurity, or information technology security, focuses on protecting computers and data from criminal behavior. The understanding of human performance, capability, and behavior is one of the main areas that experts in cybersecurity focus on, both from a human-computer interaction point of view, and that of human factors. This book is a unique source of information from the human factors perspective that covers all topics related to the discipline. It includes new areas such as smart networking and devices, and will be a source of information for IT specialists, as well as other disciplines such as psychology, behavioral science, software engineering, and security management. About Author

Dr. James Muller is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on human and machine intelligence. He combines computational modelling, machine learning, brain imaging, and experimental approaches to understand human cognition, ageing, and cognitive deficits in neurological and psychiatric disorders. On machine intelligence, he is interested in developing artificial agents to mimic the human capacity of complex cognitive operation and social interaction. Dr. James received his PhD in Computational Neuroscience from the University of Bristol. He was a research fellow at the University of Birmingham (2008-10) and an investigator scientist at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge (2010-14). From 2015-22, he was a faculty member at Cardiff University (Lecturer 2015-17, Senior Lecturer 2017-21, Reader 2021-22), where he set up the Cognition and Computational Brain Lab. He is the PI or Co-I of research grants from the ERC, MRC, BBSRC and the Welcome Trust.
