Rapid demographic shifts and the rise of megacities present immense challenges and opportunities. The Global South has become a primary focal point for addressing informal settlements, rapid infrastructural expansion, and localized vernacular knowledge to create inclusive, equitable urban environments. Architecture serves as an expression of cultural identity and social values. Contemporary thought emphasizes designing spaces that reflect and empower local communities, integrating heritage conservation with contemporary progress while avoiding cultural homogenization. Modern urban design champions walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods. By focusing on livability, these spaces are designed to encourage social interaction, equity, and health, transforming public spaces into inclusive hubs of community life. Faced with skyrocketing urban populations, vertical urbanism has become a necessary typology. However, modern approaches seek to humanize high-density living by incorporating mixed-use developments, communal green spaces, and masscustomization to avoid the repetitious monotony of 20th-century housing blocks. Transportation and transit networks form the backbone of modern cities. Contemporary infrastructure planning prioritizes integrated multi-modal transit systems-such as Metro and BRTS networks-that reduce emissions, increase accessibility, and promote active mobility like cycling and walking.
